iliad hackathon-1

The Iliad hackathon is an integrated part of the Iliad summer school, organised by The Iliad Digital Twin of the Ocean Consortium. We offer you a unique chance to join this hackathon online.

When: 4-9 September

Registration deadline:  3 September

Format: Hybrid (summer school participants join on-site)

In our rapidly evolving world, achieving harmony between aquaculture, conservation goals of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), and food security is imperative. The central theme for the hackathon is Balancing Aquaculture and MPAs for Food Security. Multiple specific challenges can be chosen during the hackathon to encourage an approach from different perspectives and offer various solutions.

You are invited to address at least two of the topics below:

  1. Impact on Local Economies: Well-managed aquaculture can bolster rural coastal economies, fostering stability and improved living conditions.

  2. Reduced Pressure on Wild Stocks: Aquaculture offers an alternative seafood source, lessening the strain on wild fish stocks and promoting marine biodiversity.

  3. Environmental Degradation: Explore ways to mitigate pollution, habitat destruction, and disease spread from unsustainable aquaculture practices.

  4. Conflict with Conservation Goals: Examine potential conflicts when aquaculture growth clashes with MPA conservation goals, leading to habitat degradation.

  5. Biodiversity Loss: Investigate the impact of aquaculture on native species, aiming to prevent biodiversity reduction within MPAs.

  6. Disease Transmission: Propose strategies to prevent disease outbreaks in aquaculture settings that could harm wild populations.

Offline and Online Participation

We encourage mixing online and offline participants, recognizing each group's unique strengths. The use of both open in-situ and space-based data in an interoperable fashion is key. To bridge the knowledge gap among teams, a substantial portion of the educational resources from the Summer School will also be accessible to participants of the online hackathon.

Awards and Opportunities

The hackathon is open to global participation, and abstracts of all the results will be published on Iliad outlets. A selection (number to be decided) will get extra opportunities to promote and communicate the teamwork and team members. European participants of the winning team (s) will be invited to join the Cassini hackathon.
